Reading Skills Curriculum
Reading is key to learning. Our school encourages our students to read as many books as they can. Since students nowadays are busy with all kinds of extra-curricular activities, tutorial classes, assignments, revisions and other leisure activities after school, they may not have much time for reading. Therefore, our school has taken the initiative to provide them with various opportunities to read. For example, Morning Leisure Reading allows our students to borrow magazines in the morning, Morning Reading Time very Tuesday and Thursday morning encourages students to read together in their own classrooms, and there is Reading Class once a week for students to borrow books in the library to enable self-directed learning and to conduct literature-based project learning through the Reading Club for all primary levels.
Project Learning: allows students to read classics written in the original language and appreciate both Chinese and Western works of literature. Students will read, analyze, discuss, present and complete worksheets concerning the content of the project with advanced reading strategies as a group. For instance, advanced reading strategies used for a selected literature piece called ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’ (one of the Four Chinese Great Classic Novels) for Primary 6 students, include ‘Consideration of All Factors’, and ‘Guess and Match’. A Primary 5 example of advanced reading strategies for the selected literature piece called ‘Journey to the West ’ include Attribute Listing, Examination of Both Perspectives,Alternatives. Other advanced reading strategies include 5W1H, Content Prediction using Book Covers, Compare and Contrast, Predict All Consequences, etc. In addition to project learning, reading comprehension skills such as skimming, scanning and inspection will also be taught to improve students’ reading efficiency. Furthermore, there are different stories on the school website and e-books to cultivate students’ interests towards reading and increase their exposure to diverse forms of text.
Reading Award Scheme: Reading matters at school and outside school. Reading Master Award Scheme aims to encourage our students to read at home or in the public libraries. Family supports are expected, especially when parents encourage and appreciate their children for reading and rate their performances. Students who can achieve their reading goals will be given the title of Reading Master and rewarded the chance to borrow special books.
After all, we wish our students a joyful reading experience with the companion of books.
